Let’s ditch the diets this holiday season
Are you ready for a healthier and happier holiday season? Let’s ditch the diets and focus on what truly matters most this time of year! Learn how to ditch the diets in this FREE 30 minute video teaching.
I’ve said in past years that my goal with the holidays is to thrive rather than survive. But that’s not easy to do. One thing I know for sure is that I want to be present and I want to ENJOY the season and I do NOT want to be in my head.
Because when I’m in my head the logistics and details of everything overwhelm me. I know what it’s like to constantly be thinking about:
What dish am I going to bring to this party?
Will there be anything that I can eat there?
How in the world am I going to stay on top of my health routine with all these different pulls on my time and attention?
Maybe you’re nodding your head in agreement… If you are, let’s declare this together – even if we don’t know how we are going to do it, let’s set our intentions to do it.
Let’s focus on what truly matters
We can begin right now preparing our hearts, minds and calendars for a holiday season where the focus is on the celebration and the blessing and NOT on ourselves, NOT on our fears, and NOT our worries.
That means something’s gotta go… and I think I know what that has to be: diets.
If you’re with me, declare your intention for a holiday season of peace, presence and joy!
Say it out loud right now:
- I will not let diets steal my peace this holiday season!
- I will not let diets distract me from being present with my loved ones!
- I will not let diets kill my joy this holiday season!
Don’t let body image tank your holiday spirit
With social gatherings and photos exponentially on the rise this time of year we are at risk of letting body image tank our holiday spirit. And to that I say not this year satan!
I’m going to resolve right now in advance to avoid the holiday body image traps I see laid before me. They’ve gotten me in prior years and I have learned from experience what I need to avoid.
X Walking into a party 1 of 2 ways: full of pride and high on my own recent diet victory OR full of shame because your body doesn’t look the way you want it to right now or even the way it did last year
X Body checking and scanning the room to size other women up.
X Judgment about appearances and outfits, mine and others.
X Worrying and obsessing about how I look in photos.
X Trying to make everything look perfect.
Body image can be a struggle year round, but it can be especially difficult this time of year. I am going to go back and read my own advice I wrote in the “5 Tips for Better Biblical Body Image” Sometimes you’ve gotta teach what you need to learn, am I right?!
What are YOU banishing from your holiday season this year? How will you avoid these traps? Leave a comment and tell me what you’re trying to avoid. Let’s do this together!
Don’t dread it, savor it!
Thinking about the holidays obviously makes me think about food. What holiday party does not involve eating? Work potlucks, cookie exchanges, and all the family dinners! I’m flooded with excitement just thinking about it and I know many of you are flooded with anxiety.
You’re already planning out how to combat all of the yummy food with extra exercise. You think to yourself that if you just work out more, then you won’t feel guilty for that big piece of pie you know you’ll eat. You know you will eat the pie because you don’t want to offend someone. Maybe you’ll eat the pie so that people won’t ask you why you skipped out.
Or you might be dreading the party altogether. You just want to avoid it altogether because that seems easier and makes you less anxious. We end up driving ourselves crazy as we try to process through this.
The holidays are complicated enough. We don’t need to throw anxiety and guilt about food into the mix.
This time of year is supposed to be a time to be thankful, to celebrate, and to anticipate what is to come.
Let’s not be be so busy dreading, fearing and working against holiday weight gain that we miss out on the holidays. It’s the most wonderful time of the year!
Stop judging your food choices and let yourself be nourished. Food is MORE than macros! The holiday season is a time when you can see this more easily and relate experientially to it.
Go ahead and let yourself think about the GOOD stuff — What is your favorite holiday dish? How has it nourished you?
A healthier and happier holiday season
Imagine with me… You walk into the holiday party, and you aren’t stressed out about what others might be thinking about your physical appearance. Instead of being anxious you are simply happy to be there.
Don’t you want that? Who wouldn’t?!
Think for a few minutes about how much more enjoyable this holiday season could be if you weren’t focused on body image!
I remember dreaming of this. I knew I had to change my mindset, but I wasn’t sure how to make that happen. It can feel very overwhelming, especially if you feel like you have to go at it alone.
You aren’t stuck in your current state of mind even though you may feel like it. This holiday season can be different and I want that for you. I want you to be able to walk into that party and not be consumed with diets, food, and body image.
Imagine what that might look like for you…
How would the holidays be different if you weren’t concerned with your body image, or worried about what people thought about you, or analyzing whether you should eat that piece of pie?
How would LIFE be different if you weren’t consumed with thoughts about food and your body?
It really is possible to get out of that place! You know the place that I am talking about. The place where you are discouraged and frustrated. The place where you’re anxious about being judged by others. The place where your emotions are high and you can’t get out of your own head. This is a place that no one wants to be.
