Wonderfully Made
When inspiration strikes, I take action.
It’s Day 2 of “Giving Up Diet Culture for Lent” (aka #LentItGo and #BodyLoveForLent). Before really digging in, I want to share the moment that struck me on Ash Wednesday morning as I was doing my “First 5” Bible study. It was this very moment that inspired my decision to begin this Lenten blog series and helped me to clearly set my intention for Lent, which I had been waffling on previously.
In case you haven’t heard of “First 5” it is a smart phone app created by Proverbs 31 Ministries. The premise of First 5 is your day is better and your faith is deeper when you spend your first 5 minutes of the day (or your first 5 minutes on your phone) studying the Bible. I have been using this app for over a year. It is the tool deserves sole credit for helping my accomplish my 2017 New Years Resolution to spend time in the Word of God every single day. The studies are short and sweet each day, but are daily parts of a longer series. I’ve decided it is the exact right format for me to stay consistent and stay plugged in.
Currently First 5 is doing a study series on First & Second Kings. The lesson Ash Wednesday morning called “When the Wait Is Long” taught on 2 Kings 9, God’s timing and asked the reflection question that started it all for me:
“Has God’s justice ever seemed ‘a long time coming’? What did you learn about God in that season of waiting?”
I sometimes journal my responses to these questions but rarely leave a public comment. Not Ash Wednesday. My response that morning poured out of me unexpectedly. It’s pictured below.
The way it felt to leave this comment in First 5 was something I haven’t felt in awhile. I felt stirred to action, I felt clarity of purpose, and I felt a passionate fire for this message.
I have claimed Psalm 139:14 “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” (NIV) This verse speaks right to my heart and cuts through the lies of diet culture.
This verse came to life for me in the Ellie Holcomb song “Wonderfully Made.” If you have ever believed the lies of diet culture that say you are not enough just as you are, if you have ever doubted your own worth, if you have ever struggled to see your own beauty, please listen to this song.
